In 2010, Macquarie University Hospital introduced Gamma Knife technology to Australia, offering patients with complex brain conditions a new non-surgical form of treatment.
In 2015, Doug Thompson turned the deeply sad personal experience of Monique Thompson’s illness into an act of kindness. Monique herself underwent a Gamma Knife operation, which significantly improved her quality of life during the final phase of her illness.
Filled with compassion for those in need of neurosurgical care and responding to the era of rising healthcare costs, Doug's generous gift established The Monique and Doug Thompson Gamma Knife Fund.

Since its inception, the fund has supported over 85 patients in financial hardship to access this important, cutting-edge treatment, providing life-changing assistance to individuals who otherwise would not have been able to afford the operation.
For these patients, the impact of Doug's support goes beyond medical treatment – it offers hope, relief, and the opportunity for a better quality of life. The Monique and Doug Thompson Gamma Knife Fund stands as a beacon of compassion, making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing challenging medical conditions.
Doug's generosity has made a big difference and has given me, and my family, great relief during a very stressful time in my life. The doctors and their administrative and medical teams have made the Gamma Knife experience very smooth and stress-free. The nurses at Macquarie were fantastic. It was just so easy. You just felt like you belonged.
Today, Macquarie University Hospital has successfully completed over 700 treatments with Gamma Knife.
We continue to make significant strides in medical advancements at Macquarie University Hospital, ensuring that future generations benefit from the same level of compassion and excellence in healthcare.
