Information about high cholesterol and its treatment

High cholesterol occurs when there is too much blood cholesterol, particularly cholesterol stored in the form of low-density lipoprotein (LDL).

Although the body needs some cholesterol to function, an increase in the levels of cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease.

Symptoms

High cholesterol doesn't have any obvious symptoms. However it can increase your risk for conditions that do have symptoms, including angina (chest pain caused by heart disease), high blood pressure, stroke, and other circulatory ailments. If you are concerned about your cholesterol level, see a doctor for a complete heart health check.

High cholesterol levels are often caused by eating an unhealthy diet consisting of foods high in saturated fats. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also increase LDL cholesterol levels.

However, in some cases, high cholesterol is genetic.

The only way to diagnose high cholesterol is through a blood test.

Treatments for high cholesterol can include lifestyle modifications, cholesterol-lowering medication, procedures and surgery.

Risk factors

Risk factors for high cholesterol levels include:

  • age
  • poor diet
  • obesity
  • lack of physical activity
  • smoking
  • diabetes.
