A long-standing, often progressive lung condition

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) leads to stiffening of the lung tissue. ILD is an umbrella term covering a variety of conditions such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Symptoms

The primary signs and symptoms include:

  • shortness of breath
  • dry cough
  • unexplained weight loss
  • discomfort in the chest.

When to see a doctor

Anyone with the above symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

The cause of ILDs is unknown. However, major contributing factors can be classified into environmental factors and medical conditions.

Environmental factors include:

  • asbestos
  • dust, including silica dust
  • radiation treatments.

Medical conditions that cause ILD include:

  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • scleroderma.

In addition to complete medical history and physical exam, diagnosis of ILDs include:

  • CT scan of the lungs
  • lung function tests
  • bronchoscopy
  • blood tests, and ultimately lung biopsy.

The causes of ILD vary, so the treatment depends on the type of ILD. However, treatments may include:

  • oral medicine such as steroids and other medications
  • oxygen therapy
  • pulmonary rehabilitation
  • surgery.

Factors that may make you more susceptible to ILDs include:

  • age
  • exposure to environmental toxins
  • smoking
  • radiation and chemotherapy.

ILDs can be prevented by staying healthy and active, preventing infections and by vaccination.
