Treating rare and complex vision conditions

Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of medicine that combines neurology, the study of the brain and central nervous system, with ophthalmology.

Symptoms

You may need to be assessed by a neuro-ophthalmologist if you have suspected optic nerve problems, unexplained vision loss, visual disturbances, abnormal eye movements or double vision.

A neuro-ophthalmology appointment is usually requested by your optometrist or another doctor.

There are many causes for neuro-ophthalmic symptoms which we will need to review as part of your appointment.

Neuro-ophthalmologists require specialised training and expertise to diagnose and treat visual problems related to the central nervous system.

In order to diagnose your condition, we will spend a lot of time with you to understand your symptoms, take a detailed medical history and perform diagnostic tests.

Some of the common tests include:

  • eye alignment testing
  • eye movement testing
  • pupil, anterior and posterior segment testing
  • full optic nerve functional assessment which includes visual acuity, colour vision and visual field tests
  • tests of higher visual processing
  • structural measures of the optic nerve and retina.

At MQ Health Ophthalmology, we provide treatment for a wide range of neuro-ophthalmic conditions.

In some cases, these conditions are rare and complex, making the treatment process a lengthy one.

Given the wide variety of neuro-ophthalmic conditions there is no single risk factor or prevention.  We will discuss these issues that are relevant to you at your appointment.
