Protect your health when travelling overseas

MQ Health General Practice offers vaccinations to help you avoid diseases and other health conditions when abroad.

You will need to plan ahead for some vaccinations. You should visit your doctor six to 12 weeks before you leave Australia, as your body needs time to develop full immunity and you may need several doses of a vaccine.

Some common vaccine-preventable diseases found in other areas of the world are:

  • cholera
  • hepatitis A
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • meningococcal
  • tuberculosis
  • typhoid
  • yellow fever.

Different countries have different vaccination requirements. Some countries require proof of vaccination for certain infectious diseases before you can enter the country. Ask your doctor for more information.

Cost of vaccines

Many travel vaccines are not covered by the National Immunisation Program. In this case, you will need to pay for them.

There are other health-related considerations, such as medications for malaria, altitude sickness and other medical concerns whilst you travel.
