Help us to help others

You can help make a difference in the lives of patients and their loved ones while supporting our teaching and research goals.

MQ Health's volunteering program is designed to complement and enhance the quality health services we provide.

We know that connection and community are essential to health and wellbeing.

Our volunteers focus on the patients themselves, providing vital support and companionship.

As a volunteer, you will be supporting MQ Health's heal, learn and discover mission in the following ways:

  • Heal – become involved in our hospital and clinics through ward support, meet and greet services, accompanying patients to appointments, providing companionship on our wards and helping patients settle in during the admission process.
  • Learn – help develop the next generation of health professionals through our 'simulated patient program' by acting out patient roles for health professional exam assessments.
  • Discover – participate in and help facilitate research studies that the University is conducting.

Ways to volunteer

Established in 2018, our volunteer program offers many opportunities for those looking to make a difference, including:

  • Meet and greet attendants – provide a warm welcome and help our patients find their way around the hospital and clinics.
  • Ward support and patient companionship – make a difference to a patient’s hospital stay by providing support and company.
  • Consumer Advisory Committee – partner with us on this important committee to input into quality and safety initiatives, planning and projects, increase consumer and community engagement and improve our services.
  • Simulated patient program – help shape the health professionals of the future by participating in educational programs for student doctors.
  • Health and Wellbeing Collaboration (HAWC) program – make an early contribution to holistic learning for Physiotherapy and Medical students.
  • Other opportunities – as our program is new, we'd love to hear your ideas.

The first step to becoming a volunteer with us is to register your interest by completing the volunteer application form.

Our Volunteer Coordinator will then meet with you and work with you to determine the best area for you to be involved with.

We have a number of screening and check measures which are essential for patient-facing roles. Our Volunteer Coordinator will explain these to you when you express your interest.

Most volunteers start with a meet and greet role which helps them become acquainted with the hospital and clinics. Some volunteers then go on to work in the wards, while others support our teaching and research programs.

Our Volunteer Coordinator works with all volunteers to ensure they have the right support and training before they commence.

For the most part, the roles that we have are fairly flexible. Some roles have a minimum time commitment of 3–4 hours per week or fortnight for at least six months. Our Volunteer Coordinator will discuss the time commitment to you during your training and induction.

Volunteers must be aged 18 or over.

To register your interest in joining our volunteer team, please complete the volunteer application form.

Our Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch to discuss your skills and interests and explain the voluntary roles we need help with.

If you have questions about our volunteering program, please complete the volunteer application form or contact us at volunteers@mqhealth.org.au.
